DESCRIPTION:Power of the Pen is a creative writing workshop where participants interested in developing their poetry\, spoken word\, fiction\, or rapping abilities grow their skills. This workshop features but is not limited to: discussion around culture and poetry\, writing prompts\, writing time\, and performance practice. Whether you are already a writer or have never written anything that wasn’t assigned at school\, Power of the Pen shows how writing and speaking your truth changes the life opportunities available to you. Youth interested in performing with Southern Word at feature events should participate in this series. Open to youth ages 13 to 19. This workshop features but is not limited to: discussion around culture and poetry\, writing prompts\, writing time\, and performance practice. Whether you are already a writer or have never written anything that wasn’t assigned at school\, Power of the Pen shows how writing and speaking your truth changes the life opportunities available to you. SUMMARY:The Southern Word Experience
DESCRIPTION:The Southern Word Experience is our annual business event where Nashville’s professionals can come together to engage with Southern Word’s unique community in conversations around topics that affect young people\, the education field\, and the workplace. We will share successes of our workplace program “Remixing Community Through Pictures and Poetry” which provides a new opportunity for team building and crucial workplace conversations. Attendees will still have the chance to engage with\, learn about\, and uplift Southern Word’s efforts placing writer and music mentors in classrooms\, libraries\, and community organizations.The lunch will feature our fourth annual poetry slam where representatives from event partners will step behind the mic at Acme Feed & Seed to build community\, create connections through the sharing of their thoughts\, and possibly be named slam champion of the Nashville area business universe. Participation in the poetry slam is encouraged\, but it is not essential for taking part in the afternoon’s activities. Each sponsoring business will have the opportunity to nominate one colleague to take the stage on that afternoon. \nThis event is made possible due to the generous support of our sponsors.
