SUMMARY:A Celebration of Writing with Hew G & NSA
DESCRIPTION:Join Hew G and the Writers of NSA as they share their writing on Wednesday\, October 21\, at Vanderbilt Bookstore. \nBorn in Detroit\, MI\, his parents’ influence steeped him in funk\, soul\, and gospel. It wasn’t until he reached the age of 9\, during his time in TX\, that his passion for music began to flourish\, with dance emerging as his chosen medium for expression. \nAs a dedicated member of Studio One\, Academy of Villains\, theSQUAD\, and Funkywunks\, Hew honed his skills as a professional hip hop dancer\, gracing stages and competing. However\, his journey took a new turn when he relocated to Nashville\, redirecting his focus towards music production. Here\, he blended nostalgic melodies with contemporary hip hop elements\, becoming a pivotal figure in the city’s songwriting community. \nBeyond his live performances\, Hew’s talents have also extended to the screen\, with several sync placements on major networks\, TV shows\, and commercials. His music has been featured in popular series like Empire\, All American\, Hawaii 5-0\, Harlem\, and a national Pizza Hut commercial\, further cementing his impact on both the music and entertainment industries. In addition to his sync success\, Hew has also secured songwriting placements with Big Gigantic & Brasstracks\, Song House\, Rebecca Brunner\, and Hannah Everhart\, showcasing his versatility and influence as a songwriter. \n“One thing that’s consistently cool about hip-hop in Nashville is the kaleidoscopic array of unique styles. Hew G. has at least one thing in common with several other notable locals. He’s got a full band that plays with him at shows; they’re billed as Hew and the Gees. Whether you are already a writer or have never written anything that wasn’t assigned at school\, Power of the Pen shows how writing and speaking your truth changes the life opportunities available to you. DESCRIPTION:Power of the Pen is a creative writing workshop where participants interested in developing their poetry\, spoken word\, fiction\, or rapping abilities grow their skills. This workshop features but is not limited to: discussion around culture and poetry\, writing prompts\, writing time\, and performance practice. Whether you are already a writer or have never written anything that wasn’t assigned at school\, Power of the Pen shows how writing and speaking your truth changes the life opportunities available to you. Youth interested in performing with Southern Word at feature events should participate in this series. Open to youth ages 13 to 19.
