Event Navigation
The National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM), in partnership with Southern Word for the BlackLift Festival, presents Fine Tuning Masterclass: Your Voice, Your Story. In celebration of Black History Month, Fine Tuning will provide spoken word artists, songwriters, and singers the opportunity to engage in a masterclass on perfecting the art of storytelling, songwriting, and finding your voice. The Museum will host artist, activist, and music therapist Kyshona, founder of Your Song, for a masterclass workshop on February 25th from 6:30PM – 8:00PM.
Think back to your favorite song. Try to recall what stood out to you most, whether it be the soothing sounds of the melody and instruments or the constant pulse of the rhythm and drums. Now, if you were to take away those elements and really strip a song down to its base, what do you think would remain? The answer is the message, woven into lyrics that convey the artist’s story. Songwriting, like spoken word, is the art of storytelling. While singers bolster their voice with instruments and melodies, spoken word artists do the same with vocal inflections and wordplay. We invite all beginner, intermediate, and master-level songwriters and spoken word artists to join for a workshop on the art of storytelling, songwriting, and finding your voice. For our songwriters and music artists, feel free to bring your instrument to bolster your craft and for our spoken word artists, bring your creative minds.
