Celebrate a decade of voices coming together as one at the 10th Annual State of the Word. For one night only, the region's top college and high school writers, poets, emcees, and spoken word artists who have emerged from Southern Word programs convene for an unforgettable night of poetry. Students will be given a platform to create community change by speaking their truth and sharing about the issues that resonant deepest with them. This 10th year anniversary also brings special duet pairings of poetry from Southern Word alumni and youth. Inspired by the courage and truth these poets speak, you will walk away from this event inspired and forever changed.
A panel of judges will also honor one youth with the title of the fouth Nashville Youth Poet Laureate. This program aims to identify young writers and leaders who are committed to civic and community engagement, diversity and tolerance, and youth voice across Nashville.
All event proceeds go to benefit Southern Word, a non-profit youth development and education organization, and the placement of writing mentors in Middle Tennessee’s public schools.
This event and the Nashville Youth Poet Laureate program would not be possible without the following supporters: Blair School of Music, Commons at Vanderbilt, Metro Nashville Arts Commission, National Endowment for the Arts, The Office of Mayor Megan Barry, Tennessee Arts Commission, Vandy Spoken Word, and Vanderbilt Writing Studio.
